Keynote: Mainstreaming and Interfacing Indigenous Knowledge Systems-Based Technology Innovations within the South African National System of Innovation

Abstract:
Introduction
The South African government has integrated Indigenous African Knowledge Systems (IAKS) into the National System of Innovation. The IAKS offers South Africa a competitive advantage within the knowledge economy. The Bio-Economy Strategy recognises IAKS as a tool for inclusive innovation, community-based technology transfer, underscored by an Ubuntu (humane) worldview. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) established an IK-Based Bioinnovation Programme with six platforms in African Traditional Medicines (ATM), Cosmeceuticals, Nutraceuticals, Health Beverages and Infusions, Technology Transfer, and Commercialisation.
Discussion
The ATM Platform has research and innovation initiatives in priority health conditions like HIV, TB, and Diabetes. The Cosmeceuticals Platform has developed various products on anti-aging, anti-hair loss, skin toning, skin protection and moisturisers, anti-acne, anti-eczema and other skin conditions. The Nutraceuticals Platform is in the process of developing nutraceuticals, functional foods and various value-added indigenous foods. The Health Beverages Platform is developing health teas from various indigenous crops based on interfacing indigenous knowledge (IK) with modern science. This consortium is in partnership with 34 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises, and has generated over 60 value-added natural products.
Conclusion
The context within which this programme is managed is inclusive of IK holders, grassroots communities, government, academia, science councils and industry. The Ubuntu-based implementation models have proven effective in transforming the National System of Innovation in South Africa toward attainability of equitable beneficiation of the bio-resource based economy. It is envisaged that the enhancement of innovation capacity will lead to improved quality of life for all citizens.
